Indonesian Businesses Push for Omnibus Bill as Labour Groups Raise Concerns
17 July 2020
Supporters believe that the bill would help stimulate the economy and keep businesses afloat during the Covid-19 economic downturn. The Omnibus bill aims to remove discriminatory practices against foreign investors and will hopefully boost the country’s competitiveness, creating jobs for the 6.4 million workers who have lost their jobs. The government is expected to finish deliberations by early September. However, activists and even the World Bank are worried that the bill “could have adverse effects on people’s health and safety, natural assets, and labour rights.”
